It's a commonly thrown around quote that I disagree with. Both the system and the individual are potentially but not necessarily flexible. The system has more inertia.

What is probably a better statement is:
"The definition of boring is to repeat the same actions each time expecting a different outcome."

My preference is to look at every case on an individual level, finding the strengths that will allow development.

Conflict. Does the system want to change a little? If not, design another environment, and learn how to interact with the system from the outside in a way that respects the identity that both parties want to have.
