Is tenure here to stay?

Postby NKC » Thu Sep 17, 2015 9:00 am

Thoughts on the possibility of academic tenure dissappearing (probably not likely) or the addition of a continual periodic tenure review process that could result in the loss of tenure (this may be plausable)? I'm not looking for school names, but rather to know whether this is being openly discussed throughout academia.

The "Tenured Professor" in science seems like a pipe dream these days.
I think the problem is it's too binary--either you're set for
life (unless you go nuts or commit a serious crime) or career
oblivion--they tell you pack your bags in the next few weeks.
There needs to be specific criteria so they decision is not
a big surprise and different levels of tenure, not just yes or no.
If I had a university and a Prof got along with the students
and published and was engaged I would not just send anyone packing.
That's just too much of a crisis after 5 (UG) +5 (G)+5(postdoc)+5(Prof)=20 years educations
and work.
