Really good points, Dick. This is a viewpoint that makes sense normally, but can be quite hard to see when one is caught between a new job and staying where they are.

I will say, however, that in one case I have seen the counteroffer work out -- the employee effectively switched to a whole new department/job duties/manager/team at a larger company. Given it was practically like working somewhere else this may be the exception that proves the rule, but I just wanted to throw it out there.

Moving into a completely new role was also what I was referring to. In the specific case I was talking about the company had decided to offer a person a more senior role in another department within the company but the offer had not been communicated for different reasons and the person decided to move before any offer was made.
