Know your audience

Hi all. Our small diagnostics company is going through a round of hiring for post-docs and research associates. I sat in on one post-doc interview that didn't go well for the candidate. The reason? She couldn't describe what we did here or why she would fit in. Assay development in academia is different than assay development for IVD's (if you don't know what that is, that's your first assignment). We don't require people to have prior ivd experience (there aren't that many of us), but we do require people to have an idea of what they don't know and how they would go about learning it. This fits in as interview preparation- know your audience!

Good point Abby. I had one of these the other day, for a very senior position -- the fellow being interview had 15+ yrs of experience and yet he went into the Skype interview without having thoroughly checked out the company. He asked too many negative-tinged questions, he didn't have enough knowledge of the area that the company was in, and so on. He thought he did fantastic and was telling me that the next step would be to fly him out there for an interview. But when I spoke to the client, they had ZERO interest in him.
