Cancellation of NIH grant

I have a K99 from the NIH. The grant is still in the K99 phase (I still have one year and a half on the K99 period, after which the grant will switch to R00). Although this will sound crazy to many of you, now that the K99 is rolling I am thinking of not staying in academia.

Do some of you have experienced situation like this? Can I simply cancel the grant at some point because of the career change? Is it better to do so at the K99/R00 transition point?

General advice and pointers are welcome...

Thanks
