How did you get your job?

Postby Paul » Thu Nov 11, 2004 6:09 pm

I'm interested to hear how people actually got their jobs...especially faculty appointments.

Connections? Mentor help?
Cold approach?
Job advertisement?

Do people just sit and wait for positions to come up or are there ways to increase your chances for landing the right job in the right department?

Thanks,

Paul

When I was fresh out of PhD and looking for a job, I was surprised to hear that my colleagues got lecturers positions at (Australian) universities, and they did it by answering the job ad. Later I realised that there was nothing miraculous or conspiracal in it, for the reasons:

(i) Lecturer position is a junior position, and they are treated badly by higher-level faculty;
(ii) The attrition rate is high because the lecturerships are given to fresh PhD graduates on a 3-year contract, during which the young lecturer has to do an extraordinary amount of teaching at relatively low salary plus do some research and win grants.
