Getting noticed enough to stand out is the game. It takes more effort than a one-size-fits-all strategy. Sometimes it is sending a tailored cover letter or resume, sometimes it is sending your resume through a contact in the company, sometimes it is digging around to find who is the decision maker, and on and on.

It is not an applicants' market; it is a hiring people's market. They will not do back flips to find you; you must do the extra to find them. Whine and grumble all you want, but get over that enough to do the hard work of landing that good job.
