It seems that a postdoc is essential to make the leap into industry, or academia for that matter. But, is it career suicide to do a postdoc in the same lab as you did your Ph.D. in? How does industry view this? Does the answer change if your Ph.D. PI has connections in industry?

At this stage of your career, you could not make a worse move than to do a postdoc in your graduate laboratory. I strongly recommend against it. Many people, in academics and in industry, view it as a tenative move, not the strong move of an independent scientist.

For it to be justified, there would have to be an incredibly compelling reason for you to stay. Having a boss with industry connections is not compelling.

Your boss must like you if he wants you to stay, so his contacts in industry will still be helpful to you when you make the leap.

There are tons of labs out there with great science and excellent contacts in biotech/pharma. My advice is to get out there and talk with some of them.

Good luck,
