Reminder: Salary Not a Discussion Point

Postby Dave Jensen » Sun Feb 06, 2005 11:51 pm

Please respect our guidelines in which we request that discussion of specific salaries not be made on this site. The topic only leads to confusion and misunderstanding.

There are many good questions about negotiating salaries and other perks that are perfectly fine. We seek only to avoid questions such as "I'm a Microbiologist - What should I be paid?"

Thanks!

Seeing as this seems to come up reguarly maybe a forum FAQ or a 'read this before posting' containing all such guidelines might be useful with a link to it from the front page

Hi Nick,

We thought of this as well, but no one seems to read it. Our "rules and regulations," what we have of them, are located in the "Help" button right on the front page of the forum. Maybe we should change this button to "Read before posting", thanks!

Most people probably don't think they need to read the "help" before they post. Can you make a "sticky" thread that is always on top?

I don't understand why you guys are so militant about not discussing salaries here. People are very curious about it (obviously) and the only reliable sources for salary information are subscription databases. If someone wants to say "I live here, I have this education and experience, here is how much I make at this type of company" I don't see the problem with that. I think plenty of people would appreciate seeing it. If anybody assumes they will get the same thing then they have bigger problems than we can hold their hands through.

Nick,

I sure agree with you there. I had a personal experience in which another web forum that I moderated . . . We learned quickly that if you unleashed this particular discussion, it would consume the forum. Everyone, and their brother, wants to know what they SHOULD be paid, etc, and the forum fell into complete disrepair, all because salary was open for discussion.

Dave, there are many reasons that can be drummed up against posting that information, but, being that salary compensation is ONE of the most important benifits to a person that 'works', it appears odd that this conversation can not me held in a forum that offers career related advice.

Good luck all.

Jim,

Because sites like Salary.Com don't work either, readers have to resort to the traditional method of finding out about salaries . . . talking to people "live" who are in their field, their geographical region, and their industry niche, with similar years of experience.
