Great Networking Opportunity in San Diego

Postby Dave Jensen » Thu Feb 17, 2005 12:41 pm

For those of you in San Diego, there's a great networking opportunity that I just read about which will help you improve your communication skills as well. Toastmasters has been mentioned on this site as one of the ways that successful people transform their lives via an improved ability to communicate. As it turns out, there is a local San Diego group meeting weekly called the "BioToasters" which is a Toastmasters-affiliated session attended by scientists and managers alike from the S.D. biotech community. What a great chance to make contacts and improve yourself at the same time. Here are the details:

The Biotoasters club is a Toastmasters club that is open to anyone. However, many of our members are from the Biotech community, hence the name.

Lose your fears of public speaking and learn skills that will help you be more successful in whatever path you've chosen in life. Learn how to deliver great presentations, lead teams and conduct meetings, give and receive constructive evaluations, and be a better listener. We are all friendly folk pursuing an interest in better communicating.

For more information, please contact:
Wendy Hancock, president, Biotoasters

They meet Monday's at noon at:
Canji, Inc
3525 John Hopkins Court
San Diego, CA 92121.

Great Networking Opportunity in Boston

Postby Kevin Foley » Fri Feb 18, 2005 7:24 am

For those of you in the Boston area, here's an excellent networking opportunity:

Since February 2002, BiotechTuesday has been inviting people from the Boston biotechnology community to trendy spots around town. A variety of industry professionals attend each month, including entrepreneurs, investors, attorneys, scientists, and journalists. No lectures - no agenda. Some call it networking, others just good fun, and the event offers both.

The organizers rent a downtown Boston bar once a month, and usually at least a couple of hundred people show up. Sometimes it is held in conjunction with one of the big scientific conferences. Admission is free if you are on the invitation list (you need to apply by sending them some details about who you are). Maybe 20% of the attendees are job-hunting, and the rest are just networking or having a good time. Tends to be a relatively senior crowd with few RAs, probably because of the invitation-only format. I?ve met famous Harvard professors, journalists, VC?s and start-up CEOs at it, so it is certainly a very diverse opportunity to network.

Cheers,
Kevin
