The National Center for Education Statistics came out with the annual report on 2003 hires in postsecondary institutions. (I picked this off a news warning from the Chronicle of Higher Education today.)

According to the report, there were 60K more faculty members hired between 2001 and 2003, but full-time positions increased only 2% in that time. Adjunct and "part-time" postdoctoral positions lept up by 10% in that period.

I grant this applies primarily to general academia and not specifically to science or biomedical-based positions, but it's something to think about if you want to look at the future of academia.
