Post Interview

I have been a keen observer of this forum for a while. I had a question on possible scenarios and follow-up help. I presented a seminar for a medium size biotech company. The seminar went well and the manager seemed pleased with me. However she said that there were no openings at Sr. scientist level. However she offered to take up my case with her manager.
Is this a common scenario? I have read many threads on networking to get your "foot in the door". What happens after that? I would appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks for the forum and great job you guys are doing!!
