Postdoc Woes

Bjorn's problems are not uncommon. Many postdocs end up doing 2 or more postdoctoral appointments. I know several who have gone on to be successful in other academic labs, so a "change of scenery" may help him. Tell him to check the back of Science magazine for postdocs that interest him and start making plans for a move. Also, Bjorn will have to realize that failure is a part of science. When I was a graduate student and postdoc, everybody I knew had several projects going on simultaneously. You increase your chances of having at least one project produce publishable data.
