Recruiting firms for novices?

I am currently a postdoc (< 3yrs) looking for a job in the industry either in technology or product development. In addition to networking and online applications, I have sent out my résumé to several recruiting firms to expand my search. I understand that recruiting firms work better for candidates with substantial experience. My question is-

Has anyone in this forum had any success using recruiting firms with limited or zero industry experience?

I greatly appreciate any insight and advice!

Hello DA,

You have it right. Industry recruiters work with companies who employ them to find people with specific kinds of experience. Perhaps this might be 2 or 3 years of experience at a minimum. We've placed some postdocs directly out of their 2-4 year stint (past that point, we can't help them) but it is a very unusual occurance. At this point in your career, it would be far better to use recruiters for advice, for suggestions of contacts, etc, as opposed to some kind of great help in your job search. John Greene was correct when he said that there are only a limited number of entry level positions that get filled through recruiters ... my guess is that this number is so low it would surprise even him.

Best thing to do . . . Totally focus on your networking process and consider a couple of contacts with recruiting firms only as networking leads.

PS - Don't forget temp staffing firms. They can be a good resource for entry level people.

I got recruited away from my first job after 2 years experience. I had gotten phone calls as a postdoc, but nothing came of it. For certain rare expertise, a recruiter might find people only at a university, but one wonders why the companies don't just conduct this kind of search themselves (most do).
