moving from government lab to academia

Hi! I've been working in a government lab doing basic research in the physical sciences for 5 years (2 as postdoc, 3 as staff). My research has gone well, with many good publications, but I am concerned about the rapid shift towards applied research that is occuring at my lab. I've also found that I enjoy mentoring students a lot more than I thought I would, and I would like to do more of that than I can in my current position. I've decided to apply for academic tt positions this year.

Most of the advice I've seen is for new PhD's or postdocs in regard to research statements, who to choose for letters, and teaching statements. Unlike newly minted PhD's, I have some experience at writing grant proposals already, and I have been successful at competing for internal funding in my 3 years on staff (but no funded external grants yet). Anyone have some advice for a successful youngish scientist who wants to move back into academia?
