PhD Abroad

I'm a research technician in the biomedical sciences starting to look into graduate schools. I'm a US citizen, but as I love travel I'm starting to think about possibly going abroad for my graduate studies. I want to know if this would harm my career options. Are universities in Western Europe thought of as equal of US universities? If I left, would it harm my ability to get industry jobs back in the US if I decide to return?
