Making the Leap

{The following is a prompt from a Science Careers writer seeking story content]

I write a regular column called Mind Matters for and hope that some of the people on this list might will be willing to send me their views (or post them here) on the topic of my next article: "Making the Leap to an Independent Investigator."

What factors, personal and situational, either facilitate or undermine the journey to becoming an independent PI? If you have made such a transition successfully or have been stymied along the way, what have you learned from your experiences? What are some of the obstacles you've faced and how can they be overcome?

I welcome hearing your ideas and thoughts on this general topic. Please include information about what level you are at in your career. If you don't want to identify yourself in the article, we can keep it confidential. My email address:

Thanks so much!
