Another point is to try and stay current with your chosen field. It\'s not easy, but if you were able to do something parttime or on a consulting basis, that might help. Hard to say because it depends on the field. But I think that future employers will want to see at least an attempt to stay current.

I\'ve also found that employers (outside academia) don\'t like to see an employment gap, regardless of the reason. Even if the reason is a good one, like for having children, if the position is highly competitive, they will go with someone without a gap. Unkind, but true.

As a student, I sat on the admissions committee for my graduate program, and we saw and admitted plenty of people who weren\'t coming right out of college. But again, make an effort to stay current.
