Hello Forum Readers:

Please join me for a career workshop on the campus of Virginia Tech. The meeting takes place on Saturday, October 3rd and is sponsored by the Virginia Tech Postdoctoral Association (VTPA) and the VT Graduate Student Assembly (GSA).
"Finding Science & Engineering Opportunities In a Down Market: Technical Careers in Transition and Turbulence"
Dave Jensen, Moderator, AAAS Science Careers Discussion Forum and Tooling Up columnist

In a period of shrinking demand like the one we’re expected to have in the science and engineering job market through 2010, the majority of jobs are not advertised. For those coming out of grad school or a postdoc, there’s a strong pull to remain in academia; universities and mentors provide little help in identifying alternatives. Let’s face it, exploring all career prospects requires you to dig really deep in order to act on your options.

One thing remains true . . . Looking for a job requires a very clear understanding of how the job market works and just what it takes to be successful. This seminar has been designed to leave you with this valuable information.

In this presentation by Dave Jensen (Monthly Columnist with the AAAS and Contributing Editor, Contract Pharma Magazine) you will hear about the common factors in successful job searches managed by those coming from academia. There are core “success factors” at work behind the scenes that will impact you, no matter how many years of experience you bring to your job search. (This material will be very relevant even if your job search is not for 2-3 years.)

Your speaker will identify those success factors, focus on several of them for further elaboration, and then conclude with a discussion of how to explore your career options via the networking process, something that Dave Jensen has written about in biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry journals for more than 25 years.

Time and Date: Saturday, October 3rd, 11AM - 12:15 PM
Special: Time has been set aside on this same day for one-on-meeting career planning meetings with your speaker. Ensure you schedule one early!
Location: Squires Student Center, Brush Mountain Auditorium, Virginia Tech
