How to Publish in Science
Monday, October 19, 2009
6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Society for Neuroscience Meeting, Hyatt Regency Chicago Grand Ballroom B, 151 East Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL

An editor from the journal Science Signaling will discuss the submission, review, approval, and publication process for the family of Science journals. The presentation will cover what editors look for in strong submissions and what reviewers are asked to consider when reading manuscripts. The editor will walk through the process of submitting a paper through the review process and finally to publication, as well as explaining what types of papers are suitable for publication in Science as opposed to a specialty journal. After the presentation, audience members have the opportunity to ask questions of the editor.

Tuesday, October 20, 2009
6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Society for Neuroscience Meeting, Hilton Chicago Williford A, 720 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL

Could you be missing out on an exciting and rewarding career outside of academic or industrial research? Increasingly, Ph.D.-level scientists are becoming aware of other career opportunities beyond bench research. Come to this workshop to consider what your own career path in these so-called "nontraditional" areas might look like. We'll discuss the types of alternative careers available, how to parlay your current skills and values into a new area, ways to research career options, and how to develop the skills you might need.
