Upcoming Events - San Diego - LA - Milwaukee

There are several Upcoming Science Careers events. Let me know if you have questions about any of them.

Job Search Essentials

* Date: Sunday, December 6, 2009
* Time: 6:15 p.m. - 8:15 p.m.
* Location: American Society for Cell Biology Meeting, San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, CA
* Must be registered for ASCB Meeting to attend.

No matter what sector you plan to work in, job searching can be a daunting task. Join us as we help graduate students, postdocs, and other early-career scientists prepare for job searches in academia, industry, and beyond. We'll talk about networking your way to work; where to look for openings; cover letters, resumes/CVs, and other parts of your application package; and how to put your best foot forward in an interview. This workshop will help to put you one step closer to your dream job.

How to Publish in Science

* Date: Monday, December 7, 2009
* Time: 6:15 p.m. - 8:15 p.m.
* Location: American Society for Cell Biology Meeting, San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, CA
* Must be registered for ASCB Meeting to attend.

An editor from the journal Science will discuss the submission, review, approval, and publication process for the journal. The presentation will cover what editors look for in strong submissions and what reviewers are asked to consider when reading manuscripts. The editor will walk through the process of submitting a paper through the review process and finally to publication, as well as explaining what types of papers are suitable for publication in Science as opposed to a specialty journal. After the presentation, audience members have the opportunity to ask questions of the editor.

Creative Job Searching

* Date: Wednesday, December 9, 2009
* Time: 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
* Location: Keck School of Medicine, Aresty Auditorium - LG Level, Harlyne J. Norris Cancer Research Tower, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA

Being able to submit job applications online makes searching for jobs outside of academia seem deceptively easy. In reality, finding a position, particularly in the current economic climate, may take more creativity. In this workshop, we'll talk about the importance of networking, how to market yourself properly, and other ways to get a leg up on the competition when applying for nonacademic jobs.

Work/Life Balance: Finding What Works for You

* Date: Monday, December 14, 2009
* Time: 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m.
* Location: Medical College of Wisconsin, H1210/1230/1250, Milwaukee, WI
* More information on this event.

This seminar intends to help you effectively manage a work/life balance that allows you to succeed in your career and have time for your family and your life outside the workplace. Learn more about what work/life balance means in today's busy workplace, how to assess your time management needs, and how to make the most of your time at work and at home.
