Recruiter wants my advice, can I ask for a contact?

Postby Karlyn B. » Wed Feb 13, 2013 11:23 am

Hello!
I'm wondering if it's inappropriate to use a recruiter interaction to make contact with a nonprofit I'm interested in.

Yesterday I was contacted by a recruiter on LinkedIn who was looking for my advice on potential candidates to fill a position at a health nonprofit. She told me exactly what organization and position she was recruiting for. Interestingly, the nonprofit she is recruiting for is a group I have been interested in for years, and would really love the chance to network with.

I'm not qualified for the position she's recruiting for, I'm sure, but it occurred to me to use this recruiter interaction to get in touch with someone at the nonprofit, just for an informational interview.

My question is, is this too much of a stretch just to make a connection? Am I better off cold-calling/emailing someone at the nonprofit directly instead?
