How to determine the level (rank) of a research position in a big pharmaceutical company (e.g. BMS or Merck)?

Every company has a different scheme, but they are a lot like this . . .

BS level - Research Associate
BS Advanced and MS Level - Senior Research Associate
PhD Entry Level - Research Scientist
PhD Senior level - Senior Research Scientist
PhD Senior Level - Principal Scientist or Staff Scientist
and then, Management Track, ie Directors, VPs, etc.

Richard,

A position called "Research Investigator" would generally be considered the same as "Research Scientist" in another company. It is a post held for at least a couple of years.
