Biotech Jobs in the Carolinas

Postby Bill Estes » Fri Nov 05, 2004 2:34 pm

I've been looking at postings and jobs advertised in the Carolinas. There just aren't all that many of them. I thought that this region, particularly in the Raleigh-Durham area, was supposed to be a hotbed of biotech jobs? It appears to me that the "pickins are slim" as we say.

Any comment?

Maybe thats true now, but key positions are always being filled. Some companies are perpetually in a hiring freeze, but they still fill key positions. It hasn't been easy out here for a while.

Here's a pretty decent list of companies to search at:

Even biotech clusters with a lot of companies (see Andrew's link) can have ups and downs. The RTP area always seems to be bigger than it actually is, as well. It gets a lot of press, and yes ... the state is very pro-biotech. But, it really isn't a Boston or San Diego, San Fran, etc. Instead, its a smaller hub and a very liveable region, a factor that some people don't always assign to those other locations.

For what it's worth, here are a few more companies in NC. My impression of the area is that it's a bit more focused on production and not quite as much on R&D (although I'm sure there are many research jobs there as well). Good luck with the job search.

This looks pretty ugly here, but if you cut and paste into Excel it should look ok:

Cogent Neuroscience
EMD Pharmaceuticals
Expression Analysis
Inspire Pharmaceuticals
Inveresk Research

KBI BioPharma
Lab Corp.
Merix Bioscience
Norak Biosciences
Novozymes North America
Nuada Pharmaceuticals
Phase Bioscience
Quintiles Transnational
Salix Pharmaceuticals
Syngenta Biotechnology
