Biochemical Engr- your views?

My background....I have a MS in Biochemical Engineering and I am working as a research associate in a top medical school (Boston). I took this job because of visa issues, upon graduation. Now, I am thinking of moving to biotech industry. I am really worried that I made a huge mistake in taking up this job as it is a "protein chemistry" postion and not the field I wanted to work (fermentation).

So, when I apply for fermtentation openings in biotech companies (my masters thesis was on fermentation), will they even consider my resume as most of the work I am doing now is Proteomics.

In short, can a Chemical Engineer go back to an engineering position after working at the bench....that too academic?

Hi Prabhu,

You'll need to structure your resume in such a way that your preferred skills and experiences show up in the top part of the document. Put an objective statement in there that highlights your interest in working in fermentation. I know why you are doing this . . . bioprocess people are HIGHLY discriminating, and they only hire people who are a part of their club. By going outside your field of interest, you have indeed hurt your chances of getting that fermentation job. You'll be able to fix this, but it will take a bigger effort in marketing yourself and in developing a biochem engineering networking effort.

Make sure you get with the companies who make this equipment (B. Braun, New Brunswick, etc) and their sales reps. I have always found that the sales reps calling on the fermentation sites have the best overall knowledge of who is hiring in their field. In short, you can get back to the ChE field, but you're going to have to hustle,
