A Moderator's Reminder: You Are Posting in an Open Forum

Thank you for your participation on the AAAS Science Careers Forum. Every now and then, I like to remind our participants of the advantages and disadvantages of posting on a public forum.

Of course, the great advantage of this unique platform is that you can sign up and be totally anonymous. You won't be receiving any spam emails, you won't get yourself "identified" by search engines, etc. We allow for a very anonymous process here. Still, it doesn't hurt to remind you that it IS INDEED a public forum, and that search engines crawl through the site on a regular basis. Always remember this when you are posting something controversial, and PLEASE remember that you don't have to use your real name while posting here. (We do ask, however, that you use a "name or initials" instead of a crazy nickname etc.)

My reason for posting this is that I "googled" myself and saw a post I made on another forum years ago that was mildly embarrasing (I was going on a cruise ship, and I asked others on the forum how to smuggle liquor on board. I used my real name!). Sure enough, that taught me a lesson,
